Rory O’Neill has written a thought-provoking response to those critical of the Irish public’s response to events in Paris last Friday night.
Throughout social media, certain individuals have criticised others in Ireland for expressing more sympathy with those affected by events in Paris than with others in Beirut, Kenya or Baghdad, for instance.
O’Neill – in a piece posted to Facebook late on Sunday night – states that ‘it’s not humanly possible to care deeply about every awful thing that happens in the world. If we did we wouldn’t be able to get out of bed in the morning.’
He insists that he is not saying we should care less about events that feel farther from us, but that people should be allowed to express their sorrow about last Friday night in Paris without being made to feel guilty.
It’s a fine piece of writing.
