Ah, that’s a bummer.
Those of us who have to put up with long commutes before and after work know how much easier they are to bear when you have something to pass the time or to give fellow passengers the impression that you’re not to be disturbed.
For the last few years, Metro Herald has ticked both boxes for commuters in Dublin, which is why we were sad to learn this evening that the last edition of the free paper will be published this Friday.
Fortunegreen Ltd announced today that the paper’s business model is “unsustainable in a difficult advertising environment,” resulting in the loss of 13 full-time jobs and a number of part-time jobs for those who cheerily distribute the paper in Dublin in the mornings.

Commenting on the news today Fortunegreen managing director Paul Crosbie said: “It’s extremely unfortunate that we have come to this decision, which sadly means the loss of jobs. Metro Herald, and the people who have worked here, have been extremely resourceful and hard-working, breaking new ground in creative print advertising.”
Reports in The Irish Times that Fortunegreen closed 2013 with accumulated losses of almost €15.5 million goes a long way towards explaining the decision and with only four days to go until it ceases publishing, we might as well make the most of it while it lasts.
We won’t be the only ones sad to see it go.
