Several killed in DR Congo after plane crashes into homes after takeoff

Alan Loughnane

Very sad news.

A plane has crashed during takeoff in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern city of Goma with 19 people onboard.

At least six bodies have been recovered after a small plane crashed, according to local officials.

Local media are reporting that some of the casualties include residents on the ground, although there’s no official reports on the extent yet.

The plane crashed during takeoff for a flight to the city of Beni, North Kivu Governor Carly Nzanzu Kasivita’s office said in a statement.

While there’s no word yet on the cause of the crash, local media are citing engine failure as a cause.

Air accidents are relatively common in DR Congo due to lax safety standards and poor maintenance.

All the country’s commercial carriers are banned from operating in the European Union.
