The majority of JOE readers want this man to be our next Taoiseach

We did not expect this

According to a poll we ran on the site earlier today, the majority of JOE readers want Sinn Féin to lead the next government.

With the odds on a November election falling from 4/1 to 4/5 on Tuesday, we asked the JOE readers who they wanted to lead the next Irish government.

The response was massive, with more than 5,500 votes cast at the time of writing, and Sinn Féin lead the way with 37.19% of responses.

In second place is Fine Gael, with 21.21% ignoring controversies over water charges, NAMA and our government’s response to the refugee crisis and going for the ‘better the devil you know’ approach.

Years of austerity have not been kind to the party that took us there in the first place; Fianna Fáil only managed 12% in the poll, or 715 votes, while Labour’s 2.41% makes for grim reading for Joan Burton and co.

The Independents fair far better with 17.56%, with the likes of Renua and the Social Democrats tallying 8.98%.
