The Social Democrats blocked former member Stephen Donnelly on Twitter yesterday

Alan Loughnane

Well, that’s embarrassing.

The Social Democrats were left red-faced yesterday when they blocked former member Stephen Donnelly on Twitter after his high-profile exit from the party earlier this year.

In 2015, Donnelly formed the party alongside Róisín Shorthall and Catherine Murphy before quitting in September this year citing difficulty in working with his party members.

But yesterday, Donnelly tweeted that he had been blocked by the party in a move he labelled “childish”.

However the blockage was short lived as the Social Democrats swiftly fixed their error…

When Donnelly left the Social Democrats two months ago, the party said they were “disappointed that he has decided to walk away from the project, we undertook, to establish and build a party.”

Donnelly himself released a statement saying: “It is a fact that some partnerships, in every walk of life, simply don’t work no matter how hard all of the parties to that partnership try to make it succeed.”

Can’t we all just get along?
