Alan Loughnane

It’s that time of the year again…

The people of Skerries are rejoicing today as it was named Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2016.

It beat off competition from 859 other towns and villages throughout throughout the country who entered into this year’s SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition.

Birdhill in Tipperary received the prize for the Ireland’s Tidiest Village while all the good work done by the people in Listowel, Kerry has paid off as they were named Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town for the second year.

It’s been a good year for the people of Munster as Ennis, Clare has claimed the prize of Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre.

Minister for Regional Economic Development, Michael Ring, was on hand to present the awards today at the Helix in Dublin.

Speaking after the event he said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Skerries; a really worthy winner. This is the 1st time Skerries has won the overall prize.

“Skerries have first entered the competition in 1959 and their win today is evidence of their consistently achieving high standards in the competition at local and regional level.

“This much sought after award is recognition of a town that embraces all aspects of the SuperValu TidyTowns Competition, builds strong community links and has grown each year in the competition,” he added.

The TidyTowns competition is organised by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and sponsored by SuperValu.

Well done to all involved…
