The Socialist Party TD was taken in by gardaí this morning.
Socialist Party TD Paul Murphy was one of four people arrested by gardaí in Dublin this morning.
The arrest is part of an investigation into an incident involving Tánaiste Joan Burton at an Irish Water protest which happened three months ago.
Here’s how Irish people on Twitter have reacted to the news.
I'm glad that Paul Murphy now appreciates the inconvenience of having his freedom of movement curtailed.

Bertie Ahern + Brian Cowen were never arrested for their crimes. #paulmurphy

At what level in the Garda was the decision taken to arrest a TD?
At what level was it decided to arrest him in dawn raid?

Wonder how long it will be before a free Paul Murphy Facebook page appears?

Paul Murphy turning blame on the govt for his own actions. Has the TD any proof any Minister ordered his arrest? He illegally held a woman!

All of these irrelevant TDs coming out of the woodwork to use #PaulMurphy as a way of getting their name out there

This Paul murphy bloke seems like a nasty piece of work. In any other world detaining somebody & inciting crowds is criminal

Paul Murphy arrest…interesting how quick the state is to mobilise when it choses, and still not a banker or bishop in prison.
— Ruairí McKiernan (@ruairimckiernan) February 9, 2015
There isn't a jury in Ireland that would find #paulmurphy guilty of falsely imprisoning Joan Burton ergo it is #politicalpolicing

I wonder was Paul Murphy TD arrested at 7am by appointment or is that courtesy only extended to bankers who put the country in hock?

Arresting #PaulMurphy in dawn raid is a step too far.Not against water charges per se,but fully support the right to free protest in Ireland
— Karl Kinsella (@Melton_Carbury) February 9, 2015
Gardai adopted Paul's "peaceful protest" technique by repeatedly shouting "fair arrest" as the 6 of them led him away #paulmurphy
