There are massive traffic restrictions in Dublin this weekend – here’s what to do

Tony Cuddihy

It’s a bit of a mess out there.

Works on the Luas Cross City project are at a crucial stage, with construction being carried out on the quays beside O’Connell Street this weekend.

The August Bank Holiday is, traditionally, the quiestest of the year for traffic so three days were set aside to complete the works.

However, with a full programme of games at Croke Park and the friendly between Celtic and Barcelona at the Aviva Stadium, people have been critical of the roadworks.

According to The Journal, cars can still move from O’Connell Street on to d’Olier Street on the south side of the city.

However, O’Connell Bridge is closed to both eastbound and westbound traffic, as the following map shows, until 6am on Tuesday.

According to LuasCrossCity.ie, this is what you need to know to get around the city (although leaving the car at home seems to be the best bet, given the high volume of traffic in affected areas).

The following local diversions will be in place…

1. Turn left from Bachelors Walk onto O’Connell Street and travel up past The Spire.

2. Take the right turn onto Cathal Brugha Street.

3. Turn right onto Marlborough Street and travel down towards the quays.
