There’s ‘still time’ to avoid an all-out Luas strike in Dublin, insists WRC boss

There’s still time to avoid an all-out Luas strike, according to the Director General of the Workplace Relations Commission.

Talks at the WRC broke down on Monday after 11 hours but Kieran Mulvey insists that there are still steps that can be taken to avoid an all-out stoppage on the Luas tracks.

Speaking to Newstalk, he insisted that there was still time to reach an agreement but that talks would have to take place, and the dispute settled, ‘sooner rather than later.’

Mulvey added that an agreement was “not going to be achieved on the picket lines. It’s not going to be achieved over the airwaves. It’s going to be achieved in the rooms of the Workplace Relations Commission.”

Luas services have already been disrupted for four days and stoppages are planned for both St. Patrick’s Day and the Easter Weekend.

Drivers had been looking for rises of up to 53% over five years. However, they have since scaled this demand back to about 6% per year over five years.
