Turkey’s Ataturk Airport has been shut down because of an ongoing military coup

Ataturk international airport in the major city of Istanbul has been shut down with no flights coming in or out, it has been confirmed.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has confirmed that the country is currently engaged in an attempted military coup by a certain faction or factions in the Turkish military.

Unconfirmed reports that that Turkey’s top military commander has been taken hostage have emerged on social media.

President Erdogan, who is believed to be on holiday at the moment, is yet to make an official comment on the confusion in Turkey.

Bridges in Istanbul and Ankara have been closed with army forces roaming the streets, as well as military jets, tanks and helicopters. All social media has been blacked out in the country.

The reason behind the coup is still the source of much speculation.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs is yet to comment.
