The Twitterati have been queuing up to praise Cork hurling goalkeeper Donal Óg Cusack for an inspirational speech at the Foyle Pride Festival this week. Here’s one of many tributes, from Des Cahill.
As is well known at this stage, Cusack is one of the few openly gay personalities in the world of sport, having bravely revealed his sexuality in his excellent book ‘Come What May’ a few years back and coped admirably with some of the inevitable flak coming from a minority of ignoramuses on the terraces in the time since.
Donal Óg was invited to officially launch the Foyle Pride Festival in Derry City on Wednesday night and made an incredibly inspirational speech which has garnered rave reviews on Twitter after word of the impressiveness of the oration starting doing the rounds in the last couple of days.
RTE’s Des Cahill was one of a number of people to praise Cusack on Twitter with a short but simple tribute that speaks volumes for the effect the speech has had on all who have read it.
It’s a fairly lengthy oration overall, but it’s inspirational, relevant and there’s plenty of humour contained within, such as when Cusack mentions his use of the word ‘Gaydar’ and how he spends more time being an Electrical Engineer but doesn’t recall getting many invites to Electrical Engineer Pride events.
