The Irish team to play Kazakhstan was hardly surprising, but the decision to omit James McClean in favour of Simon Cox has generated a great deal of debate.

Giovanni Trapattoni has again decided to go against what most would deem the logical decision to play a winger on the wing instead of striker.
Cox is a valuable member of the squad, but naming him as essentially Damien Duff’s replacement when McClean is available and in-form has many scratching their heads, none more so than Off The Ball broadcaster Ken Early.
The radio presenter best sums up the thoughts of many Irish supporters in his tweets following the team announcement.
We too share Ken’s bewilderment at another odd decision by the Italian, we don’t get it either. We may have enough to get past the Kazakh’s, but this peculiar selection policy seems like another disaster waiting to happen.
