Our gaze was grabbed by today’s story about Zak Gilsenan, the Irish-born nine-year-old who has joined Barcelona. A Midlands Radio tweet summed it up best.

Gilsenan, who was born in Castleknock in Dublin, arrives at Barca by way of Australia, where his family have been based in recent years.

He becomes the second Irish primary schooler to put pen to paper at Spanish giants over the past few months, following in the footsteps of the most famous Ballyhaunis man on the planet, Real Madrid’s eight-year-old John Joe Patrick Finn.

All of which whets the appetite for presumably Trapattoni-free major tournaments far, far in the future:
