It nearly goes without saying that 99.9 per cent of tweets from male Twitter users focussed on one thing and one thing only today.

Because our sporting appetites have been more than sated with everything that’s gone on this summer, it’s hard to believe that it’s been just short of 100 days since the unbelievable drama of the final day last season, but Saturday afternoons just aren’t the same without a regular supply of cross channel football.

We trawled through quite a few tweets in an effort to find one that sums up what the return of Premier League football means to us and we reckon that a post from football journalist Rory Smith of The Times came fairly close.

Yes, it’s far from perfect, yes footballers aren’t quite the role models that the Olympians have proved themselves to be and yes, it’s only a matter of time before the cheers for Andrei Arshavin turn into loud boos, but all of that will be gladly forgotten for now, because starting from today, our weekends are sorted for the next nine months.

Good to have you back, Premier League
