Heart-breaking news coming in from County Mayo this morning.
We reported earlier this morning that a rescue operation was underway following an incident where a car became submerged in water in County Mayo.
Following extensive searching by Gardaí, the fire services and the Coast Guard, two men have been reported missing. Both are reportedly in their late 20s.
The incident happened just outside Louisburgh in the early hours of 25 December when a four wheel drive vehicle with three men on board was crossing the Carrowniskey River at approximately 2:30am when their vehicle became totally submerged in water.
A third man, a 19-year-old, managed to escape from the vehicle and search for help at about 3am. All three of the men involved are believed to be from the area.
It’s understood that the men were travelling close to a bridge over the Carrownisky River when their SUV entered the water.
Gardaí, the Coast Guard and fire service personnel are still on the scene, believed to be 4km outside of Louisburgh.
The other two men, aged 27 and 26 years of age, remain missing. The Garda Water Unit have arrived at the scene and it is envisaged that they will begin the search for recovery of bodies.
