Video: A basking shark was spotted swimming very close to the shore in Achill yesterday

Dun dun dun dun...

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…

Yesterday was very much a day for the beach and in Achill in Mayo, it wasn’t only the locals who fancied a dip in the water.

Graham Sweeney was out enjoying the sunshine in Keem Bay yesterday when he spotted a visitor, a basking shark, enjoying a swim in very shallow waters only a stone’s throw from the shore.

Graham Sweeney spotted this Basking Shark in Keem Bay today. There has been a huge increase in sightings this year with some estimating that over 20 sharks are in the Achill waters.

Basking sharks are regular visitors to Achill and according to the What’s On in Achill Facebook page, there has been a huge increase in sightings this year, with as many as 20 estimated to be currently basing themselves around the Achill area.

Basking sharks are, of course, harmless to humans but we’d still like to have seen if there was anyone brave enough to go in and share its space yesterday.

This guy would have done it no problem…
