VIDEO: Enda Kenny has confirmed the date of the General Election

Carl Kinsella

February 26.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has asked President Michael D. Higgins to dissolve the Dáil today, and announced that this year’s general election will be held on Friday, February 26.

Mr. Kenny released a statement on his Twitter.

There had been some speculation as to whether the election would be held on Thursday or Friday, with some arguing that having it on a Thursday effectively disenfranchises many students and employed people who study or work far away from their constituency.

Kenny and co. have avoided this eventually and called for the election on a Friday, which is more facilitative of a larger turnout.

All that’s left to do is clear out some space behind your couch so you can hide while the Dáil hopefuls spend the next three weeks or so banging down your door.
