Fire crews fought the blaze at Cork’s historic Vernon Mount, which has previously featured on the World Monuments Fund List of 100 Most Endangered Sites.
The house, which has stood since the 18th century, caught fire late yesterday evening, with the fire brigade arriving on the scene just after 10pm.
The spread of the fire was substantial, engulfing most of the property – as is evident in the several videos posted to Twitter from the site.

The house was described by someone at the scene as ‘totally gutted’. It is not yet clear how the fire began.
