Ugly scenes as protesters and police clash after Freddie Gray’s funeral.
The authorities in Baltimore have declared a state of emergency after a night of widespread violence and protests engulfed the city as the National Guard have been deployed.
The incidents occurred after the funeral of 25 year-old Freddie Gray, an African-American man who suffered a fatal spinal injury in police custody and died on 19 April.
Regarding the violence overnight, Grays twin sister Fredericka has said “I think the violence is wrong. I don’t like it at all” but her pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
Footage has emerged of buildings being torched, police cars set ablaze and bricks thrown at several officers.
Here’s a brief example of the widespread violence as rioters demolish a police car.
The riots began in West Baltimore and by the end of the day had spread to the East side of the city resulting in at least 15 injured officers, including six who remained hospitalized.
27 arrests have been made so far.
Firefighters battled several blazes yesterday evening, including a fire that consumed a church’s senior centre under construction in East Baltimore.
