A kilometre long and up to eight metres deep, the cause of this massive crack is being investigated by the authorities in Mexico.

Along with ending up in the nip in Tesco and missing a last minute penalty to win the World Cup for Ireland, one of JOE’s most terrifying recurring nightmares involves the Earth opening up and swallowing us whole. Up to five metres wide in some places, the crack also went through a major road, forcing those in the area to find others ways to get around.

Geologists are looking into the reasons behind it, with a minor earthquake or an underwater river causing the soil above to collapse being two of the possibilities.
