There’s a certain irony to be found in the headline above, an irony that nearly turned out to be very painful indeed.
We’re no experts or anything, but we imagine that the first thing you should do when staging a press conference about commuter rail safety at a train station is to ensure that you practise what you preach.
With that in mind, US Senator Richard Blumenthal should probably have taken greater steps to ensure the safety of himself and an aide at a train station in Milford, Connecticut at the weekend. The two men failed to heed instructions to stand behind the yellow line and nearly paid dearly for it as a result as, just after Blumenthal uttered the line ‘safety is paramount’, the train flew past mere inches from where they were stood.
Both Blumenthal and his colleague didn’t seem to be too shocked by their brush with death immediately after it happened, but the exposure the video has got since probably won’t help his career a little further down the tracks.
