After all the squabbling, the dirty tricks and the company law enquiries, it’s presidential election day at last.
As polling day dawns, Aras an Uachtarain looks like being filled by a teeny little 70-year-old poet from Galway or a guy from Dragons’ Den whose background has been subjected to the most rigorous investigation by the media over the last few days.
Martin McGuinness, Gay Mitchell and David Norris are waiting in the wings for any late change of heart from the electorate, with the only two girls in the race, Dana and Mary Davis, fighting it out for the wooden spoon.
But if you’re like us, you’ll probably need a bit of light relief from the real election, so look no further than our Alternative Presidential Election.
We asked our Facebook fans – speaking of which, are you a fan yet? If not, join the clamour over here – to give us suggestions for who they might like to see on the ballot paper, and we got names from sport and business, from music and film.
Nobody suggested a single politician, but maybe that’s not so surprising given the general level of apathy with the political system over the past few years.
