The man was arrested and subsequently released without charge.

A man travelling on the Luas Red Line was arrested and subsequently released without charge after he was spotted wearing a bandolier of machine gun bullets around his neck on Monday night.

Gardaí said that a man was arrested for being in possession of suspected ammunition at Heuston Station at approximately 11pm on Monday night; he was taken to Kilmainham Garda Station and released without charge after it was established they were spent cartridges.

Jacqui Roche, who was sat across from the man in question and sent on the video below, spoke to Joe Duffy about the experience on Liveline on RTÉ Radio One on Tuesday afternoon.

Roche said that the man came onto the Luas at approximately 10.45pm, sat down across from her, opened up a backpack and proceeded to take out a “chain of bullets” in what Roche described as a brown metal box.

Roche added that the man had asked her for change after boarding the Luas and had put the bullets back in his backpack before exiting at Heuston Station, despite telling her he was heading to Newbridge.

Asked by Joe Duffy whether the man was using the bullets in a threatening way, Roche replied: “Not at all.”

Other listeners got in touch to describe anti-social incidents they have witnessed on the Luas; you can hear what they had to say on Liveline here.
