Water charges protest attracts between 32,000 and 100,000 people… depending on who you believe

People in Ireland are not great at estimating crowds…

You may have heard a little something about the water charges protest that took place in Dublin yesterday.

People from the capital and all over the country showed up to voice their opposition to the charges and when words wouldn’t do, they used some of these hilarious banners

The streets were mobbed with people as the Gardaí estimated that there was between 30,000 and 35,000 protesters in attendance.

But this figure didn’t hold sway with others as Trade Union organiser Brendan Ogle said that the crowd was between 80,000 and 90,000, triple what the Gardaí counted.

If the organisers of the protest are to be trusted in their guesstimate (we have our doubts), there was around 100,000 people lining the streets yesterday. Just to put that into perspective, that is around two per cent of our population.

However, according to the Irish Times, a handy app for judging the size of a crowd is the CrowdSize App which said that there were around 32,000 people in the streets at the height of the protest.

Now, were no good at judging crowd sizes here in JOE, but we reckon there must have been about 17 million people out there…
