Waterford man becomes first person to paddleboard around Ireland

Rudi Kinsella

And he did so for charity too. What an incredible achievement.

A man from Tramore, Waterford, who set off over five weeks ago on a journey to paddleboard around the island of Ireland, has returned home after successfully completing the task.

Jim Swift left Tramore on 21 June in an attempt to become the first ever person to circumnavigate Ireland by paddling a surfboard with his hands, as opposed to standing on the surfboard, according to RTÉ.

He spent up to 10 hours each day on his board, after setting off towards Cork on his first day and then travelling in a clockwise direction.

His father and brother accompanied him at different stages of the journey, and he camped out most nights during the period, occasionally spending the night in a hostel.

And as incredible as this all is, he also did it to raise money for Waterford Hospice.

What a man.

A large crowd gathered at ladies’ slip in Tramore today, and along the promenade, he received a warm, deserved welcome home.

As much as we respect Mr Swift, we can’t help but feel extremely lazy for doing nothing but sitting on the couch all day.
