This week looks set to be momentous for Irish politics, and here’s why

A lot could happen over the next couple of days.

Fine Gael has been a party under the spotlight in recent weeks and speculation is growing that Enda Kenny will step down as leader of the party in the next couple of months.

This seems the most likely outcome or else he may face an oust from within his own party with leading figures from Fine Gael set to cast their hats into the ring to become party leader.

On Saturday night, Leo Varadkar appeared to make his play for the top job and called on Enda Kenny to address the current leadership situation in Fine Gael.

He released a statement saying: “Everyone is waiting to hear from the Taoiseach. The current situation is distracting and destabilising for the government, the party and the country. I have full confidence in the Taoiseach to settle it.”

Then on Sunday, Simon Coveney appeared on The Week In Politics where he discussed the current situation regarding Kenny and the Fine Gael leadership.

Coveney believes that Enda Kenny should stay on until he visits the White House on St Patrick’s Day, but then there should be an orderly and quick transition in leadership within the Fine Gael party.

An Taoiseach has said he would address a meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party on Wednesday and would not discuss the matter any more until then.

But he is expected to indicate at this meeting when he intends to step down.

If he does cause a stir and announce that he doesn’t intend to walk away in the near future, it seems highly likely that he will face a motion of no confidence from his party. Maybe even as early as Thursday…
