In marking the retirement of old team-mate Paul Scholes, Gary Neville fittingly referenced some of the glowing tributes paid to the man by some of the best footballers in the world over the years.
In a move that wasn’t really surprising given the character of the man, Paul Scholes left it until late on a Saturday night to announce that he will be retiring for a second time at the end of the season and while he will be given a warm reception at Old Trafford today, it will be overshadowed by the farewell to Alex Ferguson in his last home game in charge. And that will suit Scholes just fine.
On Twitter this morning, Gary Neville sought to pay tribute to his old team-mate after 716 appearances and 155 goals in a red jersey and he did so by posting a picture of Scholes alongside some glowing tributes from the best footballers in the game, from past legends like Pele, Zinedine Zidane and Pep Guardiola to current superstars like Xavi, Xabi Alonso and Lionel Messi.

A fitting tribute by Neville and we can all be thankful that he chose to post that picture instead of a more famous one featuring the pair of them from a couple of years back…
