You may soon be able to make phone calls during flights

Alan Loughnane

This would be a big change…

The US Department Of Transportation has put forward a proposal that would allow airline passengers to use their mobile phones to make calls during flights.

Current rules prohibit the use of mobile phones for making calls during flights as they can interfere with radio frequencies on-board planes.

If the ban is overturned, it will affect flights flying from Ireland to the US for major airlines, which means next time you try to get a bit of shut eye, you might be greeted by someone talking loudly into a receiver beside you.

US Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx says, “Consumers deserve to have clear and accurate information about whether an airline permits voice calls before they purchase a ticket and board the aircraft,” meaning that airlines must make it clear when you’re booking your flights that people could be using their phones on your flight.

The US Transportation department said that any continuance of the ban would be for consumers rather than for aviation safety.

The ban was last up for discussion at the Transportation department two years ago where an overwhelming majority voted in favour of continuing the ban.
