Daniel Wiffen finally puts Down vs Armagh debate to bed

Simon Kelly

Lay down your pitchforks.

Daniel Wiffen is the talk of Ireland following his incredible Gold Medal win in the Men’s 800m freestyle race on Tuesday evening.

Following his win, the debate over his home county sparked up on the internet.

Born in Leeds, Wiffen moved to the town of Magheralin, which skirts the border of Armagh and Down, at the age of two.

The swimmer possesses both British and Irish nationality and represents Ireland at the Olympic, World, and European levels, but has represented Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games.

After Wiffen’s emotional appearance on top of the podium, both GAA teams from either county rushed to congratulate him.

Down GAA posted, “Congratulations to Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen from Magheralin who won the Gold Medal for Ireland in the pool this evening.

“A wonderful achievement for Daniel, and joy for his family and the community of Magheralin.”

Armagh GAA were just as quick, and a bit stronger in their claims, saying: “ARMAGH GOES GOLD AGAIN. Here Daniel Wiffen’s twin can be seen watching the Armagh game on Sunday before watching his brother grab Gold at the Paris Olympics today!!

“Well done to Daniel Wiffen! The pride of Armagh (past pupil of St Pat’s Armagh) & Ireland along with our county players.”

It looks like the debate has finally been settled as Wiffen’s father has entered the fray to set the record straight.

Speaking to BBC Ulster, Jonathan Wiffen said: “My daughters are saying there’s a big debate.

“The postcode for our house is County Armagh, although the village is in Co Down.

“The boys went to school in Armagh so they consider themselves County Armagh.”

Following the win for Wiffen and the All Ireland Success just days before for the county team, the swimmer also said: “What can we say? We’re All-Ireland champions and Olympic gold medallists.

“What a great county.”

Well, that’s that sorted, so.
