Brian Cuthbert was last night chosen by the Cork County Board to succeed Conor Counihan as the senior football manager.
Cuthbert, a selector this year under Counihan, was the front runner for the position along with former Cork U21 manager John Cleary and won the vote at last night’s county board meeting in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Bishopstown native Cuthbert captained Cork minors to All-Ireland glory in 1993, scoring a goal in the defeat of Meath and played in two county finals, as well as two intermediate hurling titles with the club.
His coaching career saw him involved with CIT, while he took over the Cork minor footballers in 2010 and 2011, reaching an All-Ireland Final in his first year in charge, where they just fell short to Tyrone.
After stepping down from the minor role, Cuthbert took charge of Bishopstown’s senior football team for 2012 and ’13 and now has been tasked with getting Cork back to winning ways after a disappointing few seasons since All-Ireland glory in 2010.
He has been appointed on a two-year term and is expected to name his backroom team shortly.
