The O’Byrne Cup is renowned, ahem, for the spectacular goals it produces on a regular basis and Dean Odlum’s cracking volley for Wicklow yesterday will be hard beat all season long.

The inter-county season got underway with the various provincial competitions taking place around the country yesterday and despite conditions being somewhat unfavourable, there was decent enough fare served up by all accounts.

Wicklow and Carlow IT played out a closely fought encounter in Ashford that was settled by some improvisational brilliance by Wicklow forward Dean Odlum, who crashed a volley to the roof of the net before the break after Ciaran Hyland’s initial goal-bound effort was sent into his path thanks to a good reaction save by the Carlow ‘keeper.

The move leading up to the goal was pretty impressive (try to ignore the guy beside the cameraman having a fully-blown phone conversation in the background) and Odlum lived up to his name by showing no little flour flair with a finish that was anything but half-baked.

Class.
