Anglo Irish Bank is continuing to run the pocket of the taxpayer dry following yesterday’s announcement that the bank recorded six-month losses of €8.2 billion.

‘Taxpayers put €210 million a week into toxic bank’ – the Irish Independent.

‘Anglo claims €25bn is the total cost of if NAMA loans do not fall further’ – the Irish Times.

Anglo chief executive Mike Aynsley said that the losses were “horrendous” but that a shut-down would cost another €20bn on top of the €25bn already set out for the bail out.

It was also revealed that the bank may have to repay up to €50 million to business customers for overcharging on loans between 1999 and 2004.

Meanwhile, the news emerged yesterday that Glenroe actor Mick Lally had passed away in hospital.

‘We’ve lost an icon’ – the headline on the Irish Examiner front page.

At the age of 64 Lally, best known for his role in Glenroe as farmer Miley Byrne, died after a short illness. Tributes to the actor have been flooding in from friends, colleagues and public figures.
