02/09 The Morning JOE

Life on the road gets tougher for learner drivers, the Government now favours Anglo Irish Bank wind-down and Sol Campbell still thinks he's got it at international level.

The Front Pages

Some of the headlines on the front pages this morning:

‘Learner drivers to get compulsory lessons’ – the Irish Times.

‘Novice drivers face tough rules in bid to cut road deaths’ – the Irish Examiner.

‘Cabinet in favour of gradual wind-down at Anglo’ – the Irish Independent.

Compulsory lessons will be introduced for all learner drivers and a two-restricted period will apply after they pass their test, under reforms announced by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

Penalty points for young offenders will be upped and the drink-driving limit is set to be slashed to almost zero tolerance. The RSA’s nine-point plan is set out to cut road deaths in Ireland. So far this year there have been 143 fatalities on Irish roads.

Meanwhile, the Government has changed its tune over the stance of Anglo Irish Bank and now favours a wind-down of the institution. The Indo understands that the Government has moved away from the idea of putting 20 per cent of the bank into a new ‘good bank’. It now looks as though they will favour a long-term wind-down over the next 20 years.

Tales from the Tabs

A suicidal man plunged more than 400ft from a block of flats and survived – after landing on a parked car, reports the Sun.

Thomas Magill (22) smashed through the rear window and landed on the back seat. He was “stable” in hospital last night after breaking his legs.

The aspiring actor jumped from the 39th floor of the block where he used to live.

The Sports Pages

Sol Campbell reckons he isn’t too old to play for England, according to his comments published in the Daily Star.

The Newcastle defender, 36 this month, has called on Fabio Capello to call him up to the squad at some point.

“You go to Italy where defenders and keepers go on and on. The names of those guys roll off the tongue,” he said.

“If you’re still fit and strong and still want it, it shouldn’t matter what age you are.

“You have the experience and it shouldn’t be a problem.”
