Being from DUBLIN and calling everywhere else ‘DOWN THE COUNTRY’

If you’re from outside your country’s capital, then move along now. For the rest of you, born in the centre of the universe, keep reading.

Areas beyond the Pale are of little interest to Dubliners. The names of the various counties merge into each other and are represented in our mind by a generic field. With some grass and maybe a cow in it. If you are Irish and not from Dublin then as far as we are concerned, you either live in this field or in one just like it.

Country people say their accents vary widely but as far as Dublin people are concerned, they’re all indistinguishable from each other. They all speak country!

You might have a non-Dublin friend. If you do, when you meet another non-Dublin person you wonder if your friend knows him. They might do. They are both from the country. You’re not alone in thinking this way. There is a facebook group for that.
