Pic of the Day (above)
Pope Benedict XVI waves to the faithful gathered in St. Peter Square at the Vatican as he arrives for his weekly general audience on August 4, 2010, wearing his favourite, rather fetching red hat.
Mood Swingometer
Today JOE has been feeling…jealous.
Apparently the iPhone 4 is great. Reception issues aside, it utilises video calls, enables multi-tasking, and can apparently cuddle beside you while you sleep, ensuring you wake up relaxed and filled with a warm glow. In short, it can do anything – which is a shame since we seem to be able to do anything but pick up our own copy as it’s sold out everywhere. JOE’s own Leo Stile gave the handset an exhaustive review recently, which will have to do until we wait for the inevitable demand to pass.
Tonight’s Telly
Pick of the night: Airtricity League XI Vs Manchester United, RTE TWO, 7:30pm.
Aviva Stadium finally opens for business tonight, as the best players in the Irish top flight test themselves against the Red Devils at the ground’s opening night.. This fixture is United’s last before they face Chelsea in the FA Community Shield on Sunday, and Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping to play several of the players who competed in this year’s World Cup after their extended break.
Movie pick: Demolition Man, Sky Movies Action & Adventure 10:50pm
In the great pantheon of JOE guilty pleasures, there is Congo, and there is Demolition Man. Both are two of the most ridiculous action movies of the 90s and both are incredibly entertaining from start to finish. Tonight Wesley Snipes and Sylvester Stallone go toe-to-toe in this 1993 cheese-fest, starring as a criminal and cop that are cryogenically frozen, only to reawaken in a docile 2032 Los Angeles. Is this the best movie to ever feature a Sandra Bullock-starring virtual reality headset sex scene? It’s quite possible.

Look at french ladies and get a funny feeling
Amid the French-bashing of this summer’s World Cup, it was easy to forget there are still many reasons we should be grateful for the French – the Monaco Grand Prix, cheese, Cuisine de France’s name (it was launched in and has been operated from Ireland since 1989). Another reason to go a little easy on the French is their incredible record in pumping out beauty after beauty, such as the great Brigitte Bardot. Here’s JOE’s top ten contemporary French fancies gallery.
