07/09 The End of the Day

Home time. Time to race from the office and catch the last of that sunshine. Or on the other hand, stick around for a little bit and check out our tips for tonight.

Tonight’s Telly

Pick of the night: This Is England 86, Channel 4, 10:00pm.

If you enjoyed Channel 4’s screening of Shane Meadow’s critically acclaimed This is England last night, the channel have really got a treat for you later – This Is England 86, a four-part television sequel co-written by Meadows himself, featuring much of the original cast. Reviewers are already calling 86 a stark and vivid venture, though the channel did fail spectacularly in the past with their last movie-to-television sequel, a series based on Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

More TV: Batman, Sky 1, 9:00pm.

It might have a ropey Prince soundtrack and terrible ‘acting’ from Kim Basinger, yet until the release of The Dark Knight, Tim Burton’s 1989 film adaptation of Batman was considered the pinnacle big-screen version of the caped crusader. With a memorable performance from Jack Nicholson and the ‘so odd it worked’ casting of former sitcom comedy actor Michael Keaton as the titular hero, Batman is a colourful and endlessly rewatchable time capsule to a period when superhero movies were considered rare treats.

Mood Swingometer

Today JOE has mostly been feeling kind of… optimistic.

After 13 years in development hell, could long-awaited Duke Nukem Forever videogame finally be gearing up to hit the shelves. Hell, if Axl Rose could finally release Chinese Democracy, anything’s possible.
