The front pages

It’s a mixed bag on the cover of the various broadsheets this morning, with no one story dominating the headlines. The Sunday Business Post leads with ‘A&E closures planned as cuts take their toll’. The story highlights how a number of A&E departments will have to be shut down as a result of budget adjustments. The paper’s front page also carries a story about how banks are preparing to go after the parents of defaulting mortgage borrowers in cases where they guaranteed their childrens’ home purchase.

The Sunday Times meanwhile leads with ‘Tourism in crisis over ash threat’. The article highlights an upcoming meeting between tourism executives and members of the Government, set to take place tomorrow, in which moves to protect the €5 billion industry from the impact of the Icelandic volcano cloud will be discussed.

The Sunday Times also carries a story on its front page about the fall-out from the UK election. ‘Brown urged to quit as Tories seek deal’ does what it says on the tin in highlighting moves by David Cameron to woe the Liberal Democrats into coalition government. It’s dark days for Gordon Brow meanwhile, who is coming under pressure to quit as Labour leader.

Other Stories

Page six of the Sunday Times has an interesting story about how RTE chiefs are preparing to issue guidelines for their staff on the use of Twitter. The move is in part designed to prevent over-eager RTE workers from breaking stories online ahead of time.

There’s another installment of the never ending ‘head shop’ saga on page six of the Sunday Business Post. ‘Tough new laws for head shops may drive drug-takers online’ reads the headline. The story examines how the Government’s efforts to stem the proliferation of head shops may push customers underground, and onto the Internet, in search of their products.

Tales from the tabs

The Sunday World has taken the unusual option of leading with a crime-related story. In the paper’s sights this morning is a gentleman nicknamed, ‘Buffalo Bill’. The Sunday World reckons he’s attempting to muscle his way to the top of the underworld by renting himself out as a gun for hire.

The Sunday Mirror runs with, ‘Fanning fury over Gerry funeral blunder’. The story goes that DJ Dave Fanning has apologised to the Ryan family for over stepping the mark in a recent interview by revealing intimate details of goings on at the Gerry’s wake and funeral.

The Irish Daily Star is also leading with a story about the criminal element blighting our society. This time it’s about an ‘unemployed mobster’ who has splashed the cash at his daughter’s communion. It even comes with photos of the little girl’s big day.

The Sports Pages

The back page of the Sunday World is dominated by a story about how Juventus are apparently in the hunt to sign Ireland and Wolves striker Kevin Doyle. The paper also runs a story on how Fergie has apparently admitted for the first time that the departure of Ronaldo has left a void he has struggled to fill. All very tragic.

The Irish Daily Star’s sport section also leads with transfer rumours, this time from Scotland. Apparently Neil Lennon is ‘Keane’ on keeping Robbie at Celtic. He reckons the Tallaght man might just go for it due to the prospect of playing Champion’s League football next season. Which he could also do if he returns to Spurs. Another article reveals good news for another Irish star – Damien Duff looks set to be fit for Fulham’s Europa Cup final against Atletico Madrid.

The paper’s GAA columnist Peter Canavan meanwhile reckons it’s ‘now or never for Geezer’s Lilywhites’. He believes Kildare will have learned from their bitter experience of defeat to Dublin and may benefit from the knockback in the Championship.

In the Sunday Mirror meanwhile, Shaun Berne is insisting that the future is bright for Irish rugby despite last week’s European ‘triple whammy’.
