The first round of the St Jude Classic on the PGA Tour and the a maiden hurdle from Clonmel make up today’s daily double.

JOHN THE SOLDIER posted quite a solid run last time behind Garlic hill over today’s course and distance, when Lend A Hand Son, who beat a good field at Listowel on Sunday, was four lengths behind in fourth.

With quite a bit of wet weather around this week, there is likely to be an ease in the ground today. This might be a problem for a few of his main market rivals but will not inconvenience the selection, who has point to point form on soft ground. He looks the solid pick here.

Later in the day, we’re focusing on golf and the first round of the St Jude Classic at TPC Southwind.

Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington are all vying for favouritism so it would be no surprise to see someone from this side of the world raise the trophy come Sunday evening. For betting purposes, though, a low-key first round three-ball that catches our eye. Jonathan Kaye has played just four tournaments in an injury-interrupted year while all of Brandt Snedeker’s top 25 finishes came in the opening month of the season, since which time he has gone badly off the boil.

Go for solid journeyman PAUL GOYDOS, who doesn’t win but doesn’t hack it around the course either, to come out on top of those three.
