10/08 The End of the Day

Home time. Time to get yourself a damn job, avoid gym germs, and watch Shia LaBeouf running around without CGI robots for a change.

JOE

Pic of the Day (above)

David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox breaks his bat in the fifth inning against the New York Yankees during their game Monday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City. The Red Sox emerged victorious with a 2-1 victory in the four-game series.

Mood Swingometer

Today JOE has been feeling…concerned.

Irish boss Giovanni Trapattoni looks a doubt for the inaugural Irish international match at the Aviva Stadium against Argentina tomorrow night. The 71-year-old manager is undergoing tests at Dublin’s Mater Hospital after suffering from food poisoning. Apparently the hospital trip was caused by bad shellfish that led to repeated bouts of vomiting. JOE hopes you get well soon Trap, and we hope to see you in the dugout tomorrow night to teach those Argies a lesson.

Tonight’s Telly

Pick of the night: Who Knows Best: Getting a Job, Channel 4 9:00pm.

Tonight’s documentary features two contrasting approaces on helping the unemployed find work. Emma Harrison, who owns the country’s largest employment agency, are explored alongside those of Ray Lewis, the former deputy mayor of London for young people, who advocates a `tough love’ solution to the problem. Sadly, each decide to settle their conflicting views in non-violent fashion through reasoned debate.

Movie pick: Disturbia, RTE TWO 10:50pm

Inspired by Hitchhock’s Rear Window, or that Simpsons episode where Bart had a telescope and discovered Flander’s love of purple drapes, tonight’s Disturbia is a thrilling watch. Shia LaBeouf stars as a teenage under house arrest who passes time by spying on his neighbours, but quickly discovers there may be a serial killer in his midst. Shia gets up to his usual ‘no, no no no no!‘ antics but director DJ Caruso keeps ticking along nicely until a slightly disappointing slasher-style third act. A much better project than Shia and Caruso later collaboration Eagle Eye.

Avoid gym germs

As we all know, there’s nowhere more socially acceptable to attempt combining a headband and spandex than your local gym. However, social embarrassment is not just one of the possible inflictions that may strike your average gym enthusiast – everything from verucca’s, staph infections to even ringworm are amongst the possible dangers should you venture to the gym unprepared. Thankfully, you needn’t be – as JOE’s Robert Carry has identified the top gym germs and precautions for a safe, sweaty workout. Have a read here.
