Nacer Chadli’s celebration for cupping his ears doesn’t look that strange now…
JOE spent our weekend watching vintage episodes of the Antiques Roadshow and knitting some nice woollen jumpers. It wasn’t as if there was an epic weekend of sport with football, hurling, rugby, boxing, golf, UFC and AFL all on the TV.
In between our knitting marathon, one of the more interesting stories that caught our eye over the weekend was Tottenham’s Nacer Chadli receiving a ridiculous yellow card for cupping his ears in celebration after scoring at the Emirates.
This got us thinking about some of the most ridiculous and hilarious moments when players’ names have went into the referee’s notebook.
Nacer Chadli – Tottenham vs Arsenal
Like most Spurs players in the home of their rivals, the Belgian was on the receiving end of some light hearted stick before silencing the home crowd in the best possible way. Michael Oliver, who is a decent referee in our view, had a bit of a ‘mare on this one.
Paul Gascoigne – Rangers v Hibernian
Gazza was one of English football’s great entertainers but it seems that Dougie Smith didn’t take too kindly to being shown the yellow card by the Rangers midfielder in their match against Hibernian. What a bore.

Amateur Italian Player – Pontilcelli v Riolo Terme
This is probably our favourite clip on the Internet.

Keith Gillespie – Reading v Sheffield United
The former Man Utd and Northern Ireland winger was barely 10 seconds on the pitch before swinging an elbow into Stephen Hunt’s face. Rooney’s red card against West Ham was stupid but this is just pure rocks for brains stuff. 03:10 is when all the fun starts.

Jamie Carragher – Arsenal vs Liverpool
Before he became a beloved pundit by everyone, cue Everton and Man Utd fans spitting out their tea right now, the Liverpool legend didn’t endear himself to the public during a 4th round FA Cup tie between at Highbury in January 2002.
The game was highly charged before the incident occured, it was a repeat of the previous years final and Martin Keown and Dennis Bergkamp were already sent-off.
Carragher was struck by a coin from the crowd but rather than keep his composure the defender threw the coin back into the crowd. He must be rich.
Ashley Vickers – Havant and Waterlooville v Dorchester
What article in the FA Rule book deals with the punishment for players tackling pitch invaders dressed in Borat mankinis?
We would love to read the referee’s match report on this one.

Jan Gunnar Solli – Hammarby v Degerfors
What do you do when your team are 5-0 up at home playing in front of 29,000 cheering fans as the game enters the final minutes? Scoop a pass into your shirt and run past an opponent of course.

Robin Van Persie – Barcelona v Arsenal
Before he moved to Man Utd and became Piers Morgan’s best friend on Twitter, RVP was cruelly and unjustly sent-off after receiving a second yellow card in their knock-out tie. What was his crime? He kicked the ball away one second after the ref blew his whistle at a sold-out Nou Camp.
What made this worse is that Arsenal were in a great position to go on and beat the Spanish giants before Barca made their numerical advantage count.

Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer – Newcastle v Aston Villa
Two classy lads showing some fighting spirit on the pitch, shame that they were on the same team.

Eden Hazard – Swansea v Chelsea v Ball Boy
This lad is still the oldest looking ball boy that we have ever seen. No ball boy should look like they’re older than Andrei Arshavin.

Alessandro Florenzi – Roma v Cagliari
Probably one of the most recent and cutest yellow cards on the list involved Alessandro Florenzi who scored in the 13th minute of Roma’s match against Cagliari before jumping into the stands to hug his gran. The ref must have a heart of stone.
