The World Cup is finally here – and we’ve picked out a straightforward bet for Day 1, as well as an eye-catcher from Navan’s card this evening.

SOUTH AFRICA are one of the lowest-ranked sides in the tournament (83rd), fully 66 places behind their opponents this evening, but logic is liable to go out the window on opening day.

The emotional intensity of the occasion is sure to be fever-pitch, and we can see the hosts – who’ve posted some heartening results in their warm-ups – coming out just on top against the talented but flaky Mexicans.

In racing, we’re very keen on the chances of LYNOTT in the 6.50 at Navan this evening. He was visually very impressive at Roscommon two starts ago weaving his way through the field to win going away at the end.

Subsequently last week at Fairyhouse, he was a real eye-catcher, finishing like a train from well off the pace behind Laughing Boy in a stronger handicap than tonight’s. Granted slightly more luck in running this evening, Lynott should be too strong for these opponents.
