13/08 The End of the Day

Home time. Time to repair Big Ben, watch Mel Gibson yell for his abducted son and join JOE's Fantasy Football league just hours before kick-off.

Today JOE has been feeling… sceptical

Having been unceremoniously dropped from their Europa League squad (with even Robinho getting a spot), we can’t imagine the look on Craig Bellamy’s face today as the impetuous Mario Balotelli completed his medical at Eastlands. Despite being one of City’s best performers in the 2009/2010 season, the Welshman has even suggested he may retire, although though it appears Fulham or Celtic are waiting in the wings. Can the skillful but notoriously difficult Balotelli win over sceptical Manchester City fans and the JOE newsroom? We’re hoping to be proven wrong but we have our reservations.

Tonight’s Telly

Pick of the night: Tracks and Trails, RTE One 7:30pm.

Ken Doherty embarks on a monster trek with Fair City actress Ciara O’Callaghan walk across the Dublin Mountains tonight. Beginning at the Luas terminus in Tallaght, they trek across a 40km path called The Dublin Mountains Way towards the Dart station in Shankill. Tonight is the last in the series for this extemely tiring show.

Movie pick: Ransom, BBC1 11:15pm.

Ron Howard’s tense thriller is on BBC1 tonight, and is a tremendously enjoyable watch. Mel Gibson may have gone off the deep end in recent years, but he provides one of his most intense performances as an airline tycoon whose nine-year-old son has been abducted. A great cast is rounded out by Rene Russo, Delroy Lindo and Gary Sinise, but the indelible moment of Ransom is an irate Gibson yelling ‘Give me back my son!’ at his child’s abductor. Without doubt, this is a much-overlooked 90s classic.
