The Brian Cowen radio interview saga has finally been flogged enough and most of the headlines chosen today move away from Taoiseach news. Here’s some of the headlines in the broadsheets:
‘Majority believe assisted suicide should be legal’ – the Irish Times.
‘Man must climb Croagh Patrick for abusing garda’- the Irish Examiner.
‘New alert for economy as Cowen to battle on: Report warns Lenihan may have to call in outside help’ – the Irish Independent.
The results from the Times social poll show 57 per cent of people believe doctor-assisted suicide should be legalised for terminally ill patients who wish to end their own lives.
A man who verbally abused a garda has been sentenced to climb Croagh Patrick. Donegal man Joseph McElwee, 38, was outside a pub when he called an on-duty garda a “Mayo wanker†and told him to “fuck off home to Mayoâ€. Judge Seamus Hughes told McElwee he was to do the four stations of the famous Mayo pilgrimage as a mark of respect for his fellow Irish people, especially those in the line of duty.
Taoiseach Brian Cowen is to continue the fight to remain as leader despite intense pressure from Fianna Fail backbenchers to change his leadership tact, communications and lifestyle. A new report warned the country is perilously close to calling in help for our economy from the EU or the IMF.
