17/09 The Morning JOE

Two Premier League football stars, 14 prostitutes and a transvestite in an extraordinary tale from today's tabloids, plus lots more in the Morning JOE.

The Front Pages

The Brian Cowen radio interview saga has finally been flogged enough and most of the headlines chosen today move away from Taoiseach news. Here’s some of the headlines in the broadsheets:

‘Majority believe assisted suicide should be legal’ – the Irish Times.

‘Man must climb Croagh Patrick for abusing garda’- the Irish Examiner.

‘New alert for economy as Cowen to battle on: Report warns Lenihan may have to call in outside help’ – the Irish Independent.

The results from the Times social poll show 57 per cent of people believe doctor-assisted suicide should be legalised for terminally ill patients who wish to end their own lives.

A man who verbally abused a garda has been sentenced to climb Croagh Patrick. Donegal man Joseph McElwee, 38, was outside a pub when he called an on-duty garda a “Mayo wanker” and told him to “fuck off home to Mayo”. Judge Seamus Hughes told McElwee he was to do the four stations of the famous Mayo pilgrimage as a mark of respect for his fellow Irish people, especially those in the line of duty.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen is to continue the fight to remain as leader despite intense pressure from Fianna Fail backbenchers to change his leadership tact, communications and lifestyle. A new report warned the country is perilously close to calling in help for our economy from the EU or the IMF.

Tales from the Tabs

Two Premier League soccer stars were at the centre of claims last night that they hired 14 hookers and a transvestite for a wild after-match party, the Sun reports.

Arsenal striker Carlos Vela and Fulham defender Carlos Salcido celebrated with Mexico team-mates at their squad’s hotel following their 1-0 friendly win over Colombia last week.

Vela, who scored twice in the Gunners’ 6-0 thrashing of FC Braga on Wednesday, and Salcido were among three players pictured with a blonde called Gema, apparently unaware “she” was a transvestite.

The Mexican FA have launched an investigation into the party.

The Sports Pages

Joe Cole made history during Livepool’s 4-1 Europa League win over Steaua Bucharest last night by scoring the club’s fastest ever European goal in just 26 seconds.

Meanwhile, Man City’s £24 million signing David Silva scored the opening goal in their 2-0 win away to Red Bull Salzburg.

Man City manager Roberto Mancini was delighted with Silva’s performance, his comments published in the Star: “I think that David is a fantastic player.

“After one month it is already clear he will give 100 per cent for the team and be an important player for our future.

“I think he needed time to get to know the Premier League but now I don’t think there is any problem.”
