“Man caught smuggling 18 monkeys at Mexico airport”
Fine, we’ll admit it – this story is from the Associated Press and hasn’t yet hit the tabloids – but it’s too crazy to ignore. According to the AP, a man with a ‘mysterious bulge’ under his t-shirt was stopped, searched and detained at Mexico City’s airport, with the resulting search finding 18 endangered monkeys found in pouches attached to a girdle the man was wearing.
According to authorities, 38-year-old- Roberto Cabrera arrives on a flight from Lima, Peru, when the bulge was spotted. After a fully body search, it was found that two of the tiny ‘titi’ monkeys had died.
Cabrera has been arrested for attempting to traffic and endangered species, though the Mexican citizen apparently pleaded to authorities that he had attempted to ‘protect’ the monkeys from X-rays as he went through customs.
