The first round of CAO offers will be published this morning and all of the national newspapers are bracing prospective students with various headlines:

‘Points race back as CAO offers show rise in entry standards’ – the Irish Times.

‘Points up after record exam results’ – the Irish Examiner.

‘Points soar for 700 college courses’ – the Irish Independent.

Record numbers of applications have subsequently increased the points for 700 or so college courses, mainly in the areas of science, computing and medicine, according to the Indo’s findings.

The Times tell us the figures show “two-thirds of the 70 most popular honours degree courses have registered an increase in points.”

Meanwhile, in the Examiner’s front page CAO story it is reported that the Green Party are interested in introducing third-level fees that could be repaid in the form of a graduate tax.

Tales from the tabs

Ever fancied buying a bottle of smelly stuff by a guy called Rotten? Well, now you can. Johnny Rotten has shocked fans by releasing his own perfume, according to the Star.

The unisex scent, named The Sex Pistols after the 70s legends, is on sale in 50ml bottles. Makers Etat Libre d’Orange said its wearers “must resist tradition and fight conformity.”

Two words come to mind after the weekend Premier League action; six and sick. Three games finished 6-0, while Sir Alex Ferguson was sick to see Nani have a penalty saved and subsequently allowed Fulham to earn a draw against Manchester United. The Sun report has more on how infuriated Ferguson was with Nani.

Newcastle stunned Aston Villa yesterday in the third 6-0 drumming of the weekend, after Chelsea had disposed of Wigan and Arsenal hit Blackpool for six also on Saturday. Amazingly, Chelsea have scored 12 goals in two Premier League games so far this season.
