The Sunday papers tell us about a golden handshake, want-away Fernando Torres, and how Kim Kardashian is like James Joyce.

The Front Pages

On the front page of the Sunday Independent is ‘Bailout mandarin gets €725k,’ which isn’t the story of the world’s most expensive little orange, but the news that the civil servant who advised Brian Lenihan to give the bank guarantee in September 2008 is getting his pension topped up.

David Doyle, who resigned down in February, received an initial €600,000 golden handshake, and will now get a very significant ‘top up’. His severance payments are among ‘a number included in a €10.5m pension lump sum payout to top civil servants by all government departments since 2005.’ Not bad if you can get it.

The Sunday Independent also has ‘Kenny is accused of “threats” to Creighton.’ Waterford TD John Deasy has accused the Fine Gael leader of being the insider source who commented that other candidates could be run in Lucinda Creighton’s Dublin South East constituency.

The Observer has ‘Hurricane Higgins, snooker legend, dies aged 61. The Northern Irish legend who won the World Championships in 72 and 82, lost his long battle with cancer. Another headline is ‘20,000 girls in UK at risk from genital mutilation.’ Experts believe that between 500 and 2,000 girls will be victims this summer, with 20,000 girls at risk. An estimated 63,000 women in the UK have had been victims of genital mutilation. The practice has been illegal in Britain since 1985.

Tales From the Tabs

The Sunday World has ‘Kim’s got a nice ca-rear.’ It is the story that Kim Kardashian has become the most financially successful reality star in history. She earned $5.45 million last year, of which $3.2 million came from endorsements. They also make a point of noting that she has a lovely bottom.

The Daily Mail also as a Kardashian story, ‘James Joyce is keeping up with Kim Kardashian,’ as a website www.iwl.me (I Write Like) has claimed that Kardashian’s new book Kardashian Konfidential is comparable in style with Ulysses.

They also have ‘Rachel to take a swing at Tiger,’ which reveals that Tiger Wood’s first named mistress, Rachel Uchitel 33, is to be paid $500,000 to appear in a new reality show called ‘Celebrity Rehab’.

The Irish News of the World has ‘I’ve only Don Juan,’ which reveals that one-in-five Irish men have only had one partner, while 53% of them have had five partners or less. On average an Irish male will sleep with nine women in their entire life.

The Sports Pages

“I can’t do anymore to keep Torres- his beef is with the club,” Roy Hodgson admitted to The News of the World. The 26-year-old wants out, but will there be anyone willing to pay the asking price of £70m?

‘Mart move for Ireland’ is one of The Sunday World‘s headlines on their back page. Apparently, Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill is about to make a bid for Man City’s want-away attacking midfielder Stephen Ireland.

The Observer has ‘Madrid’s bullish Ryder Cup bid’. The Spanish revealed, in their bid for the 2018 Ryder Cup, plans for a 25,000 spectator capacity par three hole that will be known as ‘the Bull Ring’.

‘Leamy close to Munster return’ write The Sunday Independent. Denis Leamy, who has been out for seven months with a knee injury, could return to action for Munster in less than a month.
