“You know you’re a junior footballer when…”
Apart from the twenty or so privileged individuals in every parish who constitute the first team, the rest of us have to make do with the odd junior game here and there to keep alive a flagging GAA career that ended on a serious level for a high percentage of individuals when they ‘discovered beer’ around 16 or 17.
It doesn’t take a high level of dedication, organisation is hap-hazard at best and there might be only a man and his dog in attendance but junior football remains a wonderful and unique part of the fabric of rural life in Ireland.
You know you’re a junior footballer if you’ve been privy to some of the experiences celebrated by this particular Facebook group. Personal favourites include, ‘the full forward has his son and nephew in the corners and ‘before every match, the forwards are told to stay wide and not bunch – but this is not what happens. The only time any forward goes wide is if they are looking for water’.
