The front pages

This morning’s front pages are largely taken up by the horrific car crash in Killarney yesterday morning which claimed the lives of four teenagers.

Brothers David (17) and Kevin Breen (15) from Killarney, Áine O’Riordan (15) from Castleisland , all died at the scene of the crash, while Brian Coffey (19) from Fossa died later in hospital. A fifth passenger, Darragh Jones (16), from Farranfore, was in a stable condition last night.

The Irish Times says that Gardaí are currently investigating the crash and want to establish “the exact movements of the vehicle in the hours leading up to the crash”.

It has been revealed by Gardaí that the car was not owned by the driver or any of the passengers. The Irish Examiner has learnt that the teenagers acquired the car while attending a house party in the Kilcummin area. The crash occurred while they travelled home from the party at 7.10am 5km outside Killarney, on the main Mallow road.

The Irish Independent has spoken to the heartbroken mother of David and Kevin Breen, the teenage brothers killed in the crash. Sheila Breen spoke of her “total nightmare” after Gardaí broke the devastating news to her on her doorstep.

Bono recovered from his recent back injury by hanging out with Bob Geldof’s 96-year-old dad.

Geldof senior, also called Bob, gets regular visits from Bono, who considers him a close friend, according the Sun.

Bob Jnr tells this month’s Q magazine: “I was with him a few weeks ago in Ireland. Bono always goes to see my dad because they get on great together.

“We went to the pub. Bono was f****d because of his back and my old man’s back was f****d too, so I was going, ‘Jesus, look at the pair of you’.”
