A Cock and Bullock story from The Tyrone Courier

We swear to God this story isn’t bull.

Eoghan Doherty

You wait your whole life for a great Ulster animal story and then two come along at once.

And no, we’re not talking about Sandra Bullock silly.

In this week’s Tyrone Courier, we hear the tale of one poor unfortunate bullock who had to be rescued by emergency services after the fool of an animal got its head stuck, in a hole, in a tree trunk, near Magherafelt.

You know the tree we’re talking about, right? Big trunk, loads of branches, leaves everywhere? Has a cow sticking out of it? Yeah, that’s the one.

A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokesperson told the paper: “We received a call… to attend an animal rescue incident… involving a large bullock which had its head trapped in a hole in the trunk of a large tree.”

Initially we thought “pull the udder one lads” but just check out the pictures below:

Thankfully, the animal was removed from the trunk uninjured a mere three hours after it first became lodged. Sweet Jeebus in heaven.

And, in a slightly related local animal note (in so far as it involves an animal) a broken-hearted peacock is slowly but surely making its way home to Annaginny Farm in Dungannon, Tyrone. Fowl play is not suspected in the matter.

After losing his female Peahen partner, the male of the species disappeared for a few weeks, presumably heading off on a bender to ‘find himself,’ get through this difficult period and maybe even bag himself another chick. Last Thursday though, the proprietor of the farm received a call (not from the bird we think) to say that the peacock was “just a short distance from his home and is expected to return any day now.”

We reckon he was probably just staying in a B&B up the road.

Thanks Tyrone Courier.
